Purple Pinkie Project

Congratulations Churchill, $494 raised. That’s 494 children saved from polio, one of the world’s most crippling diseases. But, that’s not all. Many other schools in Thunder Bay were participating in the Purple Pinkie Project, and with our $494, the total exceeds $1500. Thank you to all Churchill staff & students, who contributed and a special thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time in the name of this worthy cause.

On February 23, students from our school wil be collecting $1 donations to support Rotary International’s Purple Pinkie Project. One dollar is the amount required to cure a child of polio, anyone who donates their dollar on February 23rd will have their pinkie dyed purple. This dye is the exact same dye used by vaccination clinics to identify children who have already been vaccinated. So on February 23rd, Bring your Dollar, Save a Child.

Sr. Boys Basketball Finals

The Senior Boys basketball team dropped the first match of the city finals with the Hammarskjold Vikings 46-69, after a strong 2nd half the Trojans were unable to overcome the Viking’s overpowering 1st half play to get the victory. Top Trojan scorers were Jordan Bruyere with 12 and Matt Schmidt and Edwin Fui with 10 points each. Come cheer on the boys as they attempt to even up the series at 1 match each in our gym on Monday night.

Sr. Girls Volleyball Finals

The Sr. Trojans Volleyball team lost a hard fought battle on Friday during the first of their Best-Of-3 series with the Hillcrest Colts. After dropping the first set 14-25, the girls exchanged the lead back and forth over the next two sets, but inevitably falling short 21-25 and 20-25. The Trojans will be trying to even the series at 1 match a piece this Monday in our gym, at 4:15.

Jr. Girls Volleyball Finals

The Junior Girls Maroon team took a 1-0 lead over the Westgate Black team on Thursday in their best-of-3 series. A very entertaining match to watch the momentum was shifting almost constantly, after the Trojans won the first set 25-20, the Tigers stormed back in the second pulling out a come from behind win 25-27 lead by a 9 point serving drive. The two teams split the 3rd and 4th set, Churchill taking the 3rd, 25-21 and Westgate taking the 4th, 19-25. In the fifth and final set strong serving by Kara Jaspers and Sara Reid led the Trojans to a 15-10 win and the match victory. Come cheer out the girls on Monday at Westgate where they will attempt to secure the SSSAA title from defending champ Tigers.

Debating

On Wednesday 4 Students from Churchill participated in the Regional Debating Finals at Lakehead University. Congratulations to deabaters Shari Sekhan, Emily Blake, Brianne Olibris, Ricky Perrier and Angus Davis who all had strong showings and acted as great ambassadors for the school. Waterloo Math Contests

Sr. Boys Basketball

The Senior Boys Basketball team won their 2nd straight game mover Westgate to move on to the city finals where they will face the #1 ranked Hammarskjold Vikings. The Trojans cut the Tiger’s season short, winning the 2nd game in the series by a convincing score of 63-42. Jordan Bruyere came up big on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball scoring 17 points and coming up with many key blocks. Other top scorers included Edwin Fui with 13 and Mike Labelle with 12.

Sr. Girls Volleyball

The Trojan’s Sr. Girls volleyball team knotted up their best-of-3 series with the Westgate Tigers on Monday winning the match three sets to one. After Westgate took the first set 17-25, the Trojan’s stormed back to win the next 3 sets: 25-23, 25-22 & 25-14. The charge was led by strong serving by Julie Follis and Gillian McComack. The team will wrap up their 3 game series with the Tigers tonight at Westgate for the right to face Hillcrest in the city final.
